Youth Education and Achievement through the Arts (YEAA) Program

The Notes for Peace YEAA Program promotes academic achievement through arts and music education programs in Israeli and Palestinian public schools, primarily through the donation of "arts technology" (i.e. musical instruments, art supplies, film and photography equipment, and theatre supplies) to Jewish-Israeli low income, Arab-Israeli, and Palestinian schools, which will use the equipment for school-based music and arts education programs.

The YEAA Program

Each year, institutions of higher learning in the United States and in other countries replace used equipment from their music and arts programs (usually in good condition) with the newest, most recent equipment. Notes for Peace's Youth Education and Achievement through the Arts (YEAA) program seeks to take that used equipment, and bring it to disadvantaged public schools in Israel and the Palestinian territories, so that the schools can use the equipment for arts and music education programming.

Goals:

  • To promote the importance of staying in school and academic achievement among disadvantaged youth.
  •

  • To help close the economic and achievement gap through innovative music and arts education initiatives.
  •

  • To develop cognitive ability and encourage self-expression and individualism.
  •

  • To use music and art as platforms for exploring other cultures.
  •

  • To build communities through group learning experiences in music and the arts.

Timeline

Notes for Peace hopes to begin its YEAA program sometime in 2009.

How It Works

Notes for Peace will work with institutions of higher learning, in addition to music and arts equipment manufacturers in the United States and abroad to donate technology for the YEAA program. Notes for Peace will also locate and contact schools in Israel and the Palestinian territories to participate in the program. Prospective donor and recipient schools will be able to post offers and requests for equipment on a special members-only Notes for Peace YEAA message board. Prospective donors will be able to use the website to look at equipment requests and determine which school(s) to donate equipment; likewise, prospective recipients will be able to look at donor offers and contact the prospective donors.

Connecting Donors and Recipient Schools

Once a donation has been agreed to, Notes for Peace will work as an intermediary between the donor and recipient to ensure a smooth transfer of equipment, managing the details of transportation.

Helping YEAA Schools Build Their Music and Arts Programs

If needed, Notes for Peace will advise YEAA schools on their music and arts programming, and will work with these schools to assess the level and success of music and arts programming on a year by year basis, and work to establish lasting relationships between these schools and their donor-partners abroad.

Shipping and Taxes

Notes for Peace is currently exploring options to reduce the costs of shipping and import taxes in Israel and the Palestinian territories.
